Cha Ca

Chả Cá is a traditional Viêtnamese dish served with tuna steak (chicken, beef or tofu can be substituted), vermicelli noodles, and a medley of herbs and vegetables. Your choice of meat comes sizzling in a traditional clay cooking pot. Cook the meat to your liking then pile it along with the noodles and veggies on a lettuce leaf and dip into the delicious garlic sauce spiced with pepper, lime, and vinegar.

One of the herbs found in the Chả Cá is turmeric --- a spice often found in curry powder. Scientists believe turmeric contains possible cancer-preventing agents, especially for skin, breast and colon cancer. In Asia, turmeric was used to relieve stomach and liver-related ailments, while ancient Indian healers used it to cure obesity. Today, turmeric is believed to help prevent high cholesterol.

Fresh garlic, also found in the sauce, is known to treat certain illnesses and infections, and was used in both world wars as a substitute for penicillin.

Garlic helps prevent heart disease by reducing blood pressure and may help prevent certain types of cancer. Another useful herb found in Chả Cá is dill. Dill is known to help indigestion and serves as a natural remedy for bad breath.

Nancy Special
